That silly little saying about a woman taking your breath away never really registered with me. Until now. Seeing Val open up the door as I’m standing holding the screen door open literally takes my breath away. I can’t really say anything; I want to simply take her all in. A red dress that fits her perfectly, and even though it has a high neckline, it leaves the perfect amount to the imagination. Which…mine is running wildly.

“You…” Like I said, I can barely speak.

“Are you all right?” she asks with a twinkle in her blue eyes. Her long, strawberry blonde hair is swept up into a holder of some sort, with some strands of hair dangling down—more than enough of an excuse to push a strand or two behind her ear later on. The thought makes my mouth water. Not to mention how full and luscious her lips looked glossed up.

Taking her out tonight to Victoria’s will not only give me an opportunity to see how the servers present the menu, but also more than enough reason to be with Val. And if I get the job as head chef, I’m hoping it’ll really impress her after having a romantic dinner together.

“I’m more than all right. Val, you’re stunning,” I can’t help but tell her the truth. I usually would be more tongue-tied, or a fumbling idiot, but at this moment all I want to do is shower her with compliments. I’m sure that’s overkill and Austin or Byron would probably clobber me over the head for being such an idiot, but Val deserves it.

Val’s cheeks turn a certain shade of pink I never even saw when she was with Victor, and for some reason that boosts my confidence up a notch. I take her hand in mine and lead her to my old, battered-up Nissan, opening up the passenger side door for her.

“So, where are you taking me?” she asks as I sit in the driver’s side and put my key in the ignition.

Turning the car on, I turn and smile at her. “You’ll see,” I say, hoping this will be a nice surprise for her.
